MICHELIN TAKES ACTION TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

We lead the way towards mobility with reduced environmental impact(1) by developing products and solutions design to make mobility safer,
more accessible, efficient, and more respectful of the environment.

INNOVATING TO DESIGN THE NEW GENERATIONS OF TYRES

We follow an eco-design charter to evaluate our tyres’ environmental impact at every stage in their lifecycle(2) to reduce the overall impact while maintaining or even improving performance.

Motion For Life, Michelin - Performance Made to Last 15s - USA

Fighting waste by designing tyres that are made to last

Real change is changing less. Go the distance on your set of tyres. Our commitment is to ensure that you have a long and safe driving experience from the first mile to the last, with tyres designed to be trusted until the legal wear limit(3).

Motion For Life, Michelin - Environment 15s

Reducing vehicles' energy consumption and CO₂ emissions

Consuming less fuel thanks to low rolling resistance. From the original MICHELIN Energy Saver tyre in 1992, we have launched six generations of car tyres with improved energy efficiency: in 30 years, we have halved the rolling resistance for leading passenger cars tyre lines.(4)

Motion For Life, Michelin - Recycling 15s - USA

Investing in recycling to repurpose waste into tyres

Making tyres with yogurt pots or plastic bottles. Disruptive innovations in bio-sourced and regenerated materials will allow us to transform everyday waste(5) into materials for new tyres, among other new products. And by 2030, our goal is to have used up to 13.5 million tons of recycled materials in our tyres.(6)

Our first eco-designed tyre: MICHELIN e.Primacy

MICHELIN e.PRIMACY is the first eco-designed MICHELIN tyre whose life-cycle assessment has been incorporated into its design; it is also the first tyre on the market for which an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) has been published.

Vers un pneu durable

A car tyre line with 45% sustainable materials(7)

In October 2022, we presented a car tyre line containing 45% sustainable materials, approved for road use.
The tyre has performance levels equivalent to current tyres(8). We are well on our way to meet the interim goal of 40% of bio-sourced or recycled materials(9) across all tyre lines by 2030 towards 100% by 2050.

MICHELIN UPTIS prototype

The MICHELIN UPTIS prototype(10) is an assembled airless solution (tyre and wheel) for passenger cars. It reduces the risk of flat tyres and other air loss failures that result from punctures or road hazards, and reduces environmental impact.

A Visionary Concept Tire | Michelin

VISION concept, a tyre made from 100% sustainable materials

Unveiled in 2017, the VISION concept comprises both a wheel and an airless tyre.

Biosourced, connected and featuring a renewable tread, VISION concept offers a compelling illustration of how our sustainable development model will transform tyres between now and 2050, and achieve the objective of tyres to be made of 100% bio-sourced or recycled materials by 2050.

In 2050, our tyres will be 100% sustainable

A recipe not as easy as it looks!

ACCELERATING THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS THROUGH MOTORSPORT

Racing Today for Tomorrow’s Sustainable Mobility | Michelin

A tyre made of more than 50% biosourced and recycled materials

We developed a racing tyre which already contains 53% biosourced and recycled raw materials. It is fitted on the GreenGT H24 hydrogen-powered prototype, a car developed for endurance racing as well as on the Porsche GT4 ePerformance. This very high-performance tyre demonstrates that the disruptive technologies can still perform in extreme racing conditions.

Sustainable tyres already on track!

We developed the WorldCup MotoE tyres integrating, for the 2022 season, an average of 40% recycled and bio-sourced materials(11) while offering high levels of performance. These tyres equipped 18 riders during the 12 races of the MotoE season in 2022.

DEVELOPING SUSTAINABLE INNOVATIONS AND SOLUTIONS BEYOND TYRES

A few examples of our sustainable innovations:

MS HYDROGENE GB

Making hydrogen mobility a reality

We have been involved in hydrogen for the past 20 years. We are convinced that hydrogen mobility will be one of the essential components of clean mobility, complementary to electric batteries.

Fostering sustainable gastronomy

Fostering sustainable gastronomy

The MICHELIN guide is committed to supporting sustainable gastronomy. Green Stars, started in 2020, is a new award for chefs who help make gastronomy more responsible, enabling a more sustainable lifestyle for their customers.

WISAMO - Maritime Nantaise

Decarbonizing maritime transport

The Wing Sail Mobility (WISAMO) project is an automated, telescopic, inflatable wing sail system that fits on merchant ships and pleasure craft.  Its revolutionary design enables ships to reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Expansion of Michelin Ecological Reserve

Preserving biodiversity

In 2004, the Group created the Michelin Ecological Reserve as part of its Ouro Verde Bahia program, a sustainable development initiative aimed at testing a natural rubber production model, while stimulating economic and social development and preserving biodiversity.
